New York
A question for all the well travelled WHO community. I am looking at taking my fiancé to the Big Apple for valentine's day for a long weekend 4 days to be exact. Anyway my first thoughts are.
Is it to far to go for 4 days?
Would it be worth the cost £1400 all in plus spending money
and last but not least for WHO has been to New York what would you recommend. Oh one last thing the hotel is in the financial district near the 9/11 memorial is the city easily accessible from that part of town.

Is it to far to go for 4 days? No, just about right but you will be busy

OK but be prepared to walk... Alot

I used

I got 4 nights in The Waldorf Estoria with flights for 4 paying adults (2 teenagers) for £2400.

Re: New York
Take it it's your first time? If so, usual touristy things to do:

Places:
9/11 Memorial (museum is also open now I believe)
USS Intrepid
Find the castle in Central Park
Staten Island Ferry
Top Of The Rock
Empire State Building if it's a clear day

Food:
Katz's Deli
Eileen's Cheesecake
Motorino
Joe's Pizza (the one on Carmine St)
If you want a fancy meal, try and get in at The Modern

Re: New York
You are down by Battery Park so its convenient for Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island but you will be taking a lot of cabs and the subway to get up to mid-town and Broadway, Central Park etc but I stayed down there at the Ritz Carlton and it wasn't the end of the world being at that end of Manhattan.

Yes it is my first time. It will all be booked via British Airways and we will be staying at the Conrad on the Hudson River. Just looking for a romantic break. Thanks for the advice so far

Did this Valentine's day this year, only three nights as I been about half a dozen times. It's all good.

Anywhere is accessible in Manhattan, and the Subway system is good, though it's great to walk, gives you a better perspective, if the weather is ok, though there was heavy snow this year, so bear that in mind.

Norwich - I don't know what attractions you will end up visiting, but if 3 or 4 are on the City Pass list, it's really worth getting.

Save about 40% on entry fees and fast track past the queues in most cases. Purchased them myself on my last trip there (2006).

Re: New York
Amazing place, great buzz and lots to do.

The subway is a great way to get around, easy to use and cheap.

Can't help with anything to do unless you fancy hanging out with the homeboys in the Bronx, Brooklyn etc
Loads of great places to eat, some already mentioned but my favourite is the Blue Ribbon Brooklyn.

If you want a proper diner then

Go there everytime i'm in NY!
Been the same staff for years and they know me, even though i live in Kent!

Re: New York
Better off statying midtown....the new yorker is the most convienent.

Across the street from maceys, 5 mins from Time sq.

Try Gallagers for steak, bleeker street and west broadway for bars, best views are from the brooklyn bridge and staten island ferry.

Great place!

Re: New York
Ive just got back. This time I stayed in Williamsburg which was a great decision - however if its your first time and you're planning to do the tourist things then its probably not best for you.

Go to the rooftop bar at the Standard (if its not too cold...) for the views, if you're in Brooklyn the Wythe is good as well.

Had some good meals at Catch, Bubbys and La Esqina.

Also everywhere is accessible really, they've got Uber out there so get on it. Personally I think 4/5 days is plenty.

PS Time Square is a shithole - avoid unless you're really desperate to tick it off the list.

Re: New York
Paramount hotel is cheapish good and well located off times square. Boutiquey without the ponce.

flyingV 4:04 - Did you go to 'Diner' underneath the Williamsburg Bridge?
Great food but can't make reservations!
Theres no menu either, they just tell you what they're cooking that day.

Also one of the best views of NY is just along from there, theres a jetty that goes out into the river, just walk out and chill looking at Manhattan!

Re: New York

Didnt do that mate, shame as we were just down the road.

Bedford Avenue is great for lunch/brunch places. Loads to choose from. I'd never stay in Manhattan again.

Re: New York
LES Little Italy Chinatown is where you want to be, shame you've already booked accommodation as barring legal intervention you can't beat AirBnB. We found a two bed house with a GARDEN on E 3rd Street, round the corner from tons of great stuff, ten minute walk from Katz's... Try and: walk the highline. Go to the tenement museum. Have a cocktail at the Carlyle. Get slaughtered on light or dark at McSorleys. Eat at Momofuku. Or WD-50. Trek down Elizabeth Street, start to finish. Bowery Bar. So much to do and four days will just make you want to come back for more and more...

Re: New York
Forgot one more thing: Get a booking at PDT, fake speakeasy behind a phone booth in a hotdog parlour - you need to phone up on the day and get a reservation that night, 2126140386, from memory it's on E 8th or somewhere, near 2nd avenue I think. More info online...

Re: New York
Bathtub Gin is another good speakeasy. Burlesque night on Sunday was a laugh

I stayed at The Paramount back in 2000. It was ALL ponce then. I've never hated a hotel so much. Sounds like it's changed over the years.

Thanks for all the advice so far. It's not for definite yet just in the pipeline as I am looking to surprise my fiancé with the trip but it is somewhere both have us have always wanted to go. Would it be cheaper to get a package deal or to book the hotels and flights separately?
